Google Search Console vs Semrush
Not really rivals, whatever the budget meetings say: the free first-party baseline against the paid intelligence layer.
Google Search Console
Free, first-party, and more powerful than its reputation.
Semrush
The everything-suite, now tracking AI answers too.
Our verdict
They answer different questions. GSC tells you what IS: your actual queries, clicks, indexing problems, and Core Web Vitals, from Google itself, free. Semrush tells you what COULD BE: which keywords competitors own, how hard they are to win, and where your gaps sit. A small site’s first year needs only GSC plus patience, and we say that knowing it earns us nothing. The paid tools become rational when you exhaust GSC’s view: competitor research, scalable tracking, and link analysis. Run both eventually; pay only when the free one stops answering your questions.
“The free baseline every site owner should master before spending a cent: your real queries, clicks, indexing status, and Core Web Vitals, straight from Google. It cannot see competitors, which is exactly the gap paid tools fill. We list it unpaid, on principle.”Editorial team, on Google Search Console
“The most complete marketing suite in the business, and with Semrush One it moved first on the AI era: tracking how often ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini mention your brand. Expensive, occasionally overwhelming, and still the safest professional default.”Editorial team, on Semrush
